Elizabeth Mackenzie

Ms. Elizabeth Mackenzie is a very well respected Elder living in Rae-Edzo, Northwest Territories. She was born at Hottah Lake 87 years ago. She attended a boarding school at the age of 8 for five years. She learned most of her bush skills and women’s work from her older sister Marie Blackduck who was like a mother to her since her mother died when she was 14 years old. She married Louis Mackenzie at the age of 24 and they had nine children. She became interested in the local school education in the 1960s and was a member of the school board for about ten years. She traveled to various places representing her school board and is a recipient of various awards for her community involvement.
